Where to Eat in Boquete: The Restaurants Worth Your Time

Where to eat in Boquete: which restaurants serve good food near the town center, what to order, rough price bands, and which ones need a reservation or a car.

Most restaurants in Boquete, Panama are in or near the compact town center of Bajo Boquete. Bakery breakfasts, pizza, grills and Middle Eastern plates cover most meals there for about $5 to $25 per person. The meals worth a taxi ride are at the coffee farms, such as La Brûlerie at Finca Lérida in Los Naranjos and Café Don Nery in Alto Quiel. The best-rated dinners, at Nomad and Ngädri, deserve a booking in the dry season.

Restaurants in Boquete, Panama outnumber what you would expect in a mountain town this size. Panama's tourism authority counts more than 50 serving dishes made with local ingredients. Most cafés and casual places sit within walking distance of each other in town. The farm cafés and a few dinner spots with views are up the hillsides.

This guide groups them by what you need them for: an early breakfast before a hike, a quick lunch after a ride, a dinner worth booking, or a coffee at the farm that grew it. Opening hours and payment rules change often here, so each section says what is known and what to confirm before you go.

Layout

How restaurants in Boquete, Panama are spread out: town, Alto Quiel and the farms

Boquete's restaurants fall into three zones: the town center (Bajo Boquete), the hill villages above it such as Alto Quiel, and the coffee farms higher up the valley. Where you sleep decides how many of them you can walk to.

Bajo Boquete is where most of the bakeries, pizza places, grills and taco counters are. From a room in town you can walk to breakfast, lunch and most dinners. Casa Tía Eva, a family-friendly Mexican restaurant, is one of the places listed right in Bajo Boquete.[1] If walking to dinner every night matters to you, our guide to where to stay in Boquete compares Bajo Boquete with Jaramillo, Alto Quiel and Volcancito.

Alto Quiel is a small village of about 963 people at 1,562 meters, in the Los Naranjos part of the district.[2] Its best-known food stop is Café Don Nery, inside a working coffee farm about 10 minutes by car from town.[3] Los Naranjos is home to Finca Lérida, whose coffee shop and La Brûlerie restaurant serve breakfast and lunch. Both are taxi trips rather than walks.

Restaurants come and go in Boquete, and older directories still list some names that have changed or closed. Directory listings refreshed in late 2025 still showed APIZZA, RetroGusto and The Rock as operating.[4] Tripadvisor's 2026 Boquete ranking puts Nomad Restaurant & Lounge and Ngädri Gastronomía Panameña at the top, both at 4.9 out of 5.[5]

Mornings

Best coffee stops and breakfast spots in Boquete

For a full sit-down breakfast, Sugar and Spice Dulces Gourmet has the widest menu: eggs, pancakes, waffles, burritos and sandwiches in the morning, then burgers, nachos, tacos and salads at lunch.[6] It is a bakery first, with bread and pastries made daily, and it also offers Mexican specialties and vegetarian dishes. Its last published schedule was 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday and 8 am to 4 pm on Sunday. That schedule dates from 2022, so confirm it before you go.[6]

The Perfect Pair splits into a second-floor café and a chocolate factory downstairs that runs a chocolate-making class. Reviews put coffee and a snack there at roughly $3 to $12 per person. Boquete Baking Project is a breakfast and brunch spot that welcomes dogs, which matters if you travel with one.

Other morning options in town include Amalia Coffee Shop, Mia's Café, Pastelería Alemana, Olga's and T'ach. The Rock also serves breakfast, with river views and a play area for children. Reviews describe its breakfast as one of the pricier ones in town, at about $10 to $20 per person.

Good to know · EARLY STARTS

The earliest listed openings are 7 am at The Rock and 8 am at Sugar and Spice. For a pre-dawn start on Volcán Barú or the Lost Waterfalls, buy pastries and fruit the afternoon before.

Town cafés pour local beans, but the rarest variety, Geisha, is usually tasted at a farm or at a dedicated tasting. One operator lists a 2 h 45 min hands-on coffee and Geisha tasting at €43.[7] Our guide to where to taste Geisha coffee in Boquete covers the other options.

Lunch

Casual lunch in Boquete for riders and hikers

For a quick, filling lunch after a ride or a hike, the usual choices are APIZZA, Big Daddy's Grill, Zaytoon, Casa Tía Eva and the taco counters. Most come in at around $8 to $15 per person before drinks.

Pizza, burgers and grills

APIZZA serves pizza with gluten-free bases, plus burgers. Reviews put a meal at about $8 to $15 per person, and staff will give you the Wi-Fi password if you need to check a trail map. Big Daddy's Grill is a restaurant and bar with American and international food, coffee, frappés and cocktails, a covered terrace and free Wi-Fi.[8] It is rated 4.3 out of 5 from 1,898 reviews on Tripadvisor.[5] Reviews keep mentioning the shrimp po'boy, and a meal runs about $10 to $25.

Listings disagree on Big Daddy's hours. One event listing shows it opening in the late afternoon on weekdays and staying open well past midnight. Check current hours if you are counting on it for lunch.

Middle Eastern, Mexican and Panamanian

Zaytoon serves shawarma, hummus and falafel made with gluten-free and dairy-free ingredients. Its listing shows 11 am to 9 pm daily, closed Mondays. Casa Tía Eva in Bajo Boquete is a family Mexican restaurant with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options.[1] For quicker bites, try Tacos Rudos, Tacoholics, Patrón de Shawarma, Boquete Sandwich Shop and Rustic Bowl. Panamanian set lunches come from small fondas such as Donde Giselle, El Sabrosón and La Calderena.

Beer and a burger

Boquete Brewing Company is known for craft beer, cider and live music, with a burger van parked permanently outside. Reviews put food at about $5 to $15 and drinks at $3 to $7. Confirm its current hours before you head over.

If you are planning the ride itself, our Boquete bike rental guide covers e-bike and standard bike prices. The Boquete cycling routes guide lists five rides out of town, so you can plan lunch for the end of one. To fill the afternoon afterward, see the 33 things to do in Boquete.

Dinner

The best restaurants in Boquete for dinner, and when to book

The dinners most worth planning around are Nomad Restaurant & Lounge and Ngädri Gastronomía Panameña. Both are rated 4.9 out of 5 in Tripadvisor's 2026 Boquete ranking, and RetroGusto is also in the top group.[5] After those, the choice comes down to cuisine and setting.

Panamanian and modern

Ngädri cooks Panamanian food and also tops Tripadvisor's 2026 list of vegan-friendly restaurants in Boquete, so it works for a mixed group.[9] Nomad is a restaurant and lounge with vegetarian options and occasional live music. Given their ratings, these two are where a high-season booking makes the most sense.

Steak, seafood and grills

RetroGusto is one of the more upscale dinners in town and is listed under steaks and seafood. It does not serve pizza at lunch. Reviews recommend the outdoor terrace at the front, but you reach it up a short hill, which matters after a long hike. Christopher's Steakhouse and Butcher Chophouse are the other steak options. The Fish House and Mike's Global Grill are among the most popular seafood-and-grill choices.[10]

Italian and other cuisines

Italian is well covered: Otto Gastronomía Italiana, Il Pianista, Tre Scalini, Pastíssima, La Galería, Al Punto and Tomate Loco. For Peruvian food there is Inkas and La Cueva de Pitufo. Bluefin, Red Dragon and Chop Sticks cover sushi and other Asian dishes.

Dinner with a view

The Rock overlooks the river with views across Boquete, has a play area for children and hosts live music on some nights. Its listing shows the kitchen open until 9:30 pm. Bambuda Castle is part restaurant, part boutique hotel, with meals at about $10 to $25 per person.

Do you need a reservation?

Boquete restaurants rarely publish a booking policy, but crowds follow the dry season from December to April. January is the busiest month because the Flower and Coffee Fair (Feria de las Flores y del Café) fills the town. Lodging during the fair should be booked at least six weeks ahead.[11] February has a jazz and blues festival weekend, and Holy Week and the district's anniversary on April 11 make April busy too. In those weeks, reserve Friday and Saturday dinners at the top-rated places a day or two ahead. Our Boquete Flower and Coffee Fair visitor guide covers the fair itself.

Good to know · GETTING BACK

If dinner is outside town, arrange the return taxi before you sit down, either with the restaurant or with your driver. Cabs are harder to find on the hill roads after dark.

Coffee farms

Restaurants at or near Boquete coffee farms

Two farm cafés serve food without requiring a tour: La Brûlerie at Finca Lérida in Los Naranjos and Café Don Nery in Alto Quiel. A third farm, Eco Horqueta, serves a tasting menu, but only as part of its tour.

Finca Lérida's coffee shop serves the farm's own coffee, and breakfast and lunch are served at La Brûlerie, which overlooks the gardens. It is the easiest farm meal to combine with a tour, because Lérida's tours of about $25 to $35 include transport from town.

Best for a coffee stop with a view

Finca Lérida's coffee shop is open every day from 7:30 am to 6 pm, with breakfast and lunch at La Brûlerie.[3] La Brûlerie does not post separate restaurant hours or prices, so ask when you book. Café Don Nery is about 10 minutes by car from town.[3]

Eco Horqueta's Ancestral Coffee Experience ends with a tasting menu of Panamanian fusion dishes that use coffee as the main ingredient.[12] If you are visiting a farm anyway, check whether a meal is included before you plan lunch elsewhere.

Tour prices help you budget the whole outing. Finca Lérida runs $25 to $35 per person with transport, Don Pepe Estate about $30, and Lamastus Family Estates $45 to $55 with a reservation required, as of 2026.[13] Book coffee tours at least a day ahead. Large noon departures fill faster when cruise groups are in.[7] Our comparison of Boquete coffee farm tours covers seven farms and which include Geisha tasting. Transport

Getting to restaurants in Boquete without a car

You can walk to most restaurants in Bajo Boquete. Alto Quiel, Los Naranjos and the farms need a taxi, a bike or a tour pickup.

On foot
The town center is compact. Cafés, pizza places, grills and taco counters are a short walk apart. Before walking anywhere listed with only a "Boquete" address, check the map pin: some sit up the valley roads, and RetroGusto's terrace is reached by a hill climb.
Taxi
The usual way to reach Alto Quiel, Finca Lérida and dinners outside town. Café Don Nery is about 10 minutes by car. Agree on the fare before you get in.
Bike or e-bike
Practical for a lunch stop on a daytime ride. Less so for dinner, because the hill roads are steep and unlit.
Tour transport
Farm tours such as Finca Lérida's include transport from town, which also gets you to the farm café.

Taxi fares are where travelers most often overpay. Boquete taxis once charged flat local fares under a tariff set by the transit authority, the Autoridad de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (ATTT). In 2009, a ride to nearby communities such as Alto Boquete, Volcancito or Jaramillo cost B/.1.25, plus B/.0.25 per extra passenger. Some shared routes cost B/.0.50 per person (the balboa trades at par with the US dollar).[14] Online fare calculators for 2026 quote a $3 base fare plus $2 per kilometer, or about $13 for a 5 km ride.[15] Neither figure is a current official rate, so settle the price with the driver before you leave.

Diets

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food in Boquete

Vegetarian and vegan diners are well served in Boquete, and gluten-free eaters have a few options. Casa Tía Eva lists vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free dishes.[1] Ngädri, APIZZA and Christopher's Steakhouse lead Tripadvisor's 2026 list of vegan-friendly restaurants in town.[9]

  • Zaytoon: falafel, hummus and shawarma made with gluten-free and dairy-free ingredients.
  • APIZZA: gluten-free pizza bases.
  • Sugar and Spice: vegetarian dishes alongside the bakery and Mexican menu.
  • The Rock, Nomad, Al Punto, Bluefin, Bugabanna, Destino, Malu and Rustic Bowl: listed with vegetarian options. Check the current menu for specific dishes.

The restaurant at Tree Trek Boquete marks dishes that meet dietary needs or can be adapted on request. A classic hummus there costs $9 and a pesto penne $14 as of 2026. The penne comes with parmesan, and the desserts contain lactose.[16] Middle Eastern staples such as falafel, tabbouleh, stuffed grape leaves, hummus and baba ganoush are easy to find in town.[17] If you have celiac disease, ask how the gluten-free items are prepared, since a "gluten-free" label on a menu says nothing about a shared kitchen.

Practical

Practical tips: hours, cash vs card, reservations and the bill

Hours in Boquete shift with the season and are often out of date online. Card acceptance varies, and the bill can include tax depending on where you eat. A few habits avoid most problems.

Hours and closing days

Few restaurants keep their opening hours current online, and listings for the same place often disagree, as they do for Big Daddy's. Some places take a weekly day off: Zaytoon, for example, lists Monday as its closing day. Before a Sunday or Monday meal, or a lunch after a long ride, confirm the hours on the restaurant's own page or by asking your host.

Cash or card

Card acceptance is rarely posted. Fondas, taco counters and small cafés are the most likely to want cash. If you plan to pay by card, ask before you order rather than at the end of the meal.

Good to know · CASH

Keep small US dollar bills on you for cafés, fondas and taxis. Panama uses the dollar alongside balboa coins, and change for large notes can be short at small places.

Tax and tipping

Panama's sales tax, ITBMS, is 7% on restaurant meals of prepared food and 10% on alcoholic drinks.[18] The 7% rate has been the general ITBMS rate since July 2010.[19] Fondas and fast-food restaurants are not supposed to charge ITBMS.[18] Whether the tax is built into menu prices or added at the end varies, so read the bill. A tip of around 10% is customary at sit-down restaurants. Check first whether a service charge has already been added so you don't tip twice.

Reservations and busy dates

Outside the dry season you can usually walk in. From December to April, and above all in January during the fair, Holy Week and the early April anniversary, book weekend dinners at Nomad, Ngädri and RetroGusto, and phone ahead before a trip to a farm café.
